Arrived in Dallas with Other RV-Dream'ers

Thursday
September 17, 2009

We woke up this morning at 8:30 not moving very fast. I did manage to get the coffee brewing. Gina and I enjoyed a cup together in bed. Gina then got on facebook until I told her that she had to stop so we could go to the Base exchange and commissary. We stocked up on all food items that we had been running low on. So I guess now we are good for at least a month except for necessities like milk, eggs, and bread. We need to start eating food out of our freezer since it is packed. From there we headed back to the campground. It was starting to rain but we still had to get hooked up and get on the road. We managed to pull out of the campground and began our trek west by one o’clock. I will say that I-20 in north Louisiana is bad. I’m just thankful that I only had to drive on it for 23 miles. It rained most of the way to Dallas. Gina fixed us a ham and cheese sandwich with chips and dip for our late lunch while I was driving. We got into Dallas around four o’clock which was definitely the wrong time since traffic was already backed up. The ramp to I-635 from Highway 80 was closed down due to an accident. Now I had to figure out how to get to I-35 heading north without going through downtown Dallas. Between the CB radio and my Copilot GPS program I was able to get where I needed to without too much of a detour. We finally made it to Hickory Creek COE Park north of Dallas. We found our site but then realized I forgot to empty our tanks this morning when we were hooking up. I guess I forgot since it was raining and I was getting soaking wet. Well we then went and found the dump station and emptied our tanks. Gina was in her own world with her laptop reading Facebook. I got backed in to our site and got our home set up. I finally told her she had to get out of the truck and get our house set up on the inside.

Then there was a knock on our door and it was Don & Cheryl and they had Mike & Leslie with them.

Mike & Leslie

They were just returning from the Dallas RV show. We talked outside for a little while until they realized that their bags of ice were melting along with their ice cream. We agreed that we would ride over later after we ate. We then went inside and heated up leftovers for dinner. I finished up our blog entry and got it posted at 8:30. We then grabbed our flashlight and walked over to Don & Cheryl’s. Along the way Gina saw something jump and she said there goes a rabbit and then she turned on the flashlight and realized that it was a skunk. We just let it run on while we walked on. Well Don & Cheryl were not there so we then walked over to Mike and Leslie’s and they were there so we sat around Mike & Leslie’s new Montana fifth wheel visiting. We finally left around 10:15. Don & Cheryl gave us a ride back to our home to keep Gina from running into another skunk. Thanks Don for the ride home. I took Angel & Zoey out and then I went to bed while Gina was on Facebook. It was a good travel day just didn’t like the rush hour traffic in Dallas.

We slept in a little and even when we did wake up we laid in bed until 10:30. Both of us were just relaxing enjoying our coffee together. I watched some news while Gina was making comments on Facebook. I finally got up and took Angel & Zoey for a walk. Don called to see if we wanted to ride up to Walmart with them. We declined since we just stocked up on everything we should need for at least a few days. He called back a little later and said that Leslie and Cheryl decided that we would have a “bring your own meat” get together tonight at Mike & Leslie’s. Joe & Sherri called and said they should arrive around noon. I called them around one o’clock to see if they had arrived yet and they said yes but they had not got set up yet since Joe wanted to make sure his tanks were empty . I told them we would ride over in a little while. This was a sign for Gina to get out of her pajamas and get in the shower. After she got cleaned up we got on our bikes and rode over to where Joe & Sherri were parked. We visited with them for a little while until Joe wanted his great grandson, Kris to see my truck before his little buddy had to leave.

Hey When Can I Drive It??

I think he had more fun than if he would have been in a candy store. They left around 4:30 which only left thirty minutes for us to get ready to head over to Mike & Leslie’s for our small RV-Dream’ers get together. Gina put some brownies in the oven and I took out some fresh corn for a side dish. Joe & Sherri came by and picked us up so we wouldn’t have to walk. We finally got there around 5:30. Mike had two grills lit. However, most fulltimers only have small grills and there was eight of us which meant there was more meat than would fit on Mike’s two grills so I went back and grabbed my grill so all the meat would be done together. Mike grilled some sausage for an appetizer to get all us started. Once all the meat was done we sat down to eat and the RV stories started flowing from all of us. Before long we were all laughing our heads off. For sure there are some common things among people who go RV’ing. We have all made lots of mistakes and mishaps and we all love to eat. All the food was delicious and I know for sure I was stuffed as I’m sure everyone else was too.

We finally ended our little get together around 10:30 and headed home by way of Joe & Sherri dropping us off at home. I took Angel & Zoey outside while Gina got on Facebook. It didn’t seem like Gina was going to bed any time soon so I told her goodnight and went to bed.

We had a great day with our RV-Dream friends. Great food and fellowship, what more could you ask for in life. To say that Gina and I are having the time of our life is an understatement. Life is good!

Until tomorrow, Gina & I hope everyone has a pleasant and wonderful day, enjoying what our Father has so graciously blessed us with.

Remembering Rollie Joseph

Wednesday
September 16, 2009

Today, Gina and I celebrated our son’s second anniversary in heaven. Monday morning we placed new flowers at his grave site with Thomas before he left so he could celebrate with us.

Thomas At Rollie's Monument

First thing this morning we planted a tree in our yard in memory of him.

An Elm Tree

Then we drove to the cemetery and placed two yellow roses on his monument to mark his second anniversary in Heaven.

We miss him very much but we also acknowledge that he was only on loan to us. We were blessed that Our Father gave him to us for 20 years to teach us so much and we will forever be grateful for those 20 years of memories. Here are a few photos of Rollie Joseph:

From there we headed back to our house and got in the truck and headed north toward Shreveport, Louisiana. We are on our way to meet up with Don & Cheryl and Joe & Sherri somewhere near Dallas on Thursday. We arrived at Barksdale Air Force Base campground at 5:45 and were set up by 6:15. We both took showers and got cleaned up and headed out to eat. We went to Ralph & Kacoo’s Seafood Restaurant. We had a very nice and quiet dinner. We made it back home around 9:30 and just relaxed for awhile.

Today was a very solemn day for us. On one side we are sad that we didn’t have more time with Rollie Joseph. However, the other side of us is rejoicing in the assurance that he is with his Heavenly Father and his son Jesus Christ.

Until tomorrow, Gina & I hope everyone has a pleasant and wonderful day, enjoying what our Father has so graciously blessed us with.

Thomas Gets Engaged and Departs For Training

We woke up Saturday morning with no set plans other than Gina made a big breakfast for Thomas and Haley. I’m still trying to get over a head cold. Gina gave me a haircut. Thomas went out to dinner with Haley and proposed to her. The wedding date is unknown for now due to his obligation to the Marines.

Thomas & Haley after He Proposed to Her

Sunday we went to Jack & Sue’s house for lunch and then went back home to get ready for family pictures that we were taking at Aunt Debbie’s. She’s a professional photographer and we were taking pictures in her studio. The highlight of the photo session was both Shane and I put our uniforms on and took pictures together with Thomas. I guess I haven’t gained too much weight since I retired since my uniform still fit me.

Monday found us waking up early to help Thomas prepare for his flight that will leave later today. We are taking him to the airport. Of course Thomas waited until this morning to pack all his stuff up. They did not teach him how to pack a seabag so I helped him utilized every available space possible. We left at eleven o’clock for New Orleans. Thomas wanted to eat seafood for lunch. For all of you out there that may come and visit south Louisiana beware that most seafood restaurants are closed on Mondays. Well then he decided he wanted Popeye’s . After we ate lunch we went to the airport. Thomas got all checked in and then it was time for those dreaded goodbyes. As much as Gina and I have said goodbye to each other over the years this was hard for both of us.

Once he cleared the security check point we all headed for the car for the drive back home. I drove while Gina & Haley cried in the back seat. Once we got back home it was time to start our preparations for getting ready to get back on the road.

We woke up Tuesday morning with coffee in bed and then decided that we both had a lot to take care of before we leave on Wednesday. Gina wanted to get her garden ready for fall and winter. She also wanted to put the rocks she took from South Carolina around Thomas’s tree. She finally finished around six o’clock in her garden. After a quick shower she and Haley were off to get pedicures. While they were doing that I went and filled up with diesel. On their way home they picked up a Stromboli for dinner. It was a very busy day for us but we feel good to be getting back on the road.

Until tomorrow, Gina & I hope everyone has a pleasant and wonderful day, enjoying what our Father has so graciously blessed us with.
