Enjoyed A Wonderful Veteran's Day While Remembering All Those that Served

Gina and I thank everyone for your heartfelt comments about our family and their service to our Great Country. It really means a lot to us. There have been so many who have served this great country and we are thankful for them. This country would not be what it is today without all those who served before us nor will it continue to be the greatest nation in the world without future generations that are  willing to continue the selfless sacrifice of duty to serve our nation.

Additionally, we thank Sam & Donna for such kind words they wrote in their blog about our family.  It was very touching to us.

We celebrated Veteran’s Day by taking a drive to the Homeplace, a living history museum located here at Land Between the Lakes Recreation Area. This is a full-fledged operating home. Everything is done by manual labor including plowing with horses. All the clothes are made by hand and so on. It’s a very impressive place that brings our history to life.

After we left there we stopped at Cedar Pond Picnic area for a lunch. There are so many beautiful areas around here to enjoy. After lunch we took a short hike around the pond soaking up the scenery.

Once we made it back home we grabbed our lawn chairs and sat down by the lake. The Bald Eagles were out again today soaring above us.

While Gina was watching them I decided to do a little fishing. I did catch three small (I mean tiny) bass. We both had a good laugh. Even though I didn’t catch dinner (not that I was trying) we had a great time. It was starting to get dark so we walked back home and called it a day.

Veteran's Day

First and for most we want to salute all those men and women who have served and are still serving this great country as we celebrate Veteran’s Day today. Gina and I are proud to give tribute to our children today. They not only supported me during my career in the Navy but also have committed themselves to the defense of this country since my retirement.

On Tuesday we drove into Paducah and stopped at Duck Creek RV Park to refill a propane tank. While we were there the owner Mike Vessels treated us to a few tunes on his Bowed Psaltery. I even played a few tunes. What an amazing instrument.

Yesterday we were up early again since Uncle Walter & Aunt Nadine invited us for a little sightseeing trip to Metropolis, Illinois. This is the birthplace of Superman.

Metropolis is also the location of Fort Massac State Park. There have been many forts built here and the one that is currently standing is a reproduction of the one built here in 1802. After walking through the fort we went for a short hike along the Ohio River. By this time it was well after lunchtime so we headed back to their house for an early dinner of homemade potato chips and grilled hamburgers. We had a wonderful day with them and the meal was a special treat. Thank you both for the sightseeing trip and the wonderful meal yesterday.

The Majestic and Beautiful Bald Eagle

This entry today is dedicated to Bald Eagles

They are very special to Gina and I

As we stated yesterday one of the reasons for coming to “The Land Between the Lakes” was for Eagle watching. We have been so amazed as how they have graced us daily with their presence. There are times during the day when we can see four of them soaring high above. This past week has been so amazing and peaceful for us. Our biggest highlight came Sunday afternoon while hiking. As we were walking we startled a beautiful male Bald Eagle sitting on the ground. He then flew about 100 yards away and perched himself up on a tree. We carefully made our way to view him while keeping our distance. We just knew he would fly away at any moment. Well, we were just amazed as he didn’t fly away but rather he sat there letting us admire his great beauty. We sat there for over four hours before we said our goodbyes to him and left him alone. As we continued our hike we would look back across the lake and we could still see him sitting there.  This was a really neat experience for us and one we will never forget.

A Much Needed Dose of Nature

We know that it’s been over a week since our last post and we last said that we were moving to a location that allowed us to boondock for a couple of weeks. We planned on moving Monday morning but we didn’t get moved until Tuesday morning.

In an effort to catch everyone up we’re boondocking (no hookups) at a U.S. Forest Service Recreation Area named “The Land Between the Lakes”. It’s the only Recreation Area in the U.S. maintained by the US Forest Service. They do have full hookup campgrounds here. However, Gina and I wanted a little dose of nature and the possibility of watching Bald Eagles. We found a really nice location tucked back in the woods that overlook a small bay of water. It’s absolutely beautiful!

Since we got here we have done a lot of hiking and relaxing trying to soak up the scenery around us. One of the highlights this week was on Saturday we hiked two and half miles up to the Nature Station for their Fall Frolic. We were able to see some of the wild animals they have rescued due to being orphaned or injured. As a result they are not able to survive in the wild. This area has so much to see and do that Gina and I both highly recommend stopping for a day or two. Check out the link above for more information.
